Coexisting Primary Sclerosing Cholangitis and Autoimmune Hepatitis: Overlapping Challenges in Diagnosis and Treatment
This 2024 case report discusses a patient with ulcerative colitis, PSC, and autoimmune hepatitis who responded well to oral vancomycin. This 30-year old woman went to the hospital with abdominal pain, bloody diarrhea, and vomiting bile. She tried multiple treatment regimens, but the only one that was effective was oral vancomycin.
This insightful case report concludes that “vancomycin is an underutilized therapy” and that it may have a therapeutic role in treating this PSC/AIH overlap syndrome.
