Welcome to Day 5 of Crohn’s & Colitis Awareness Week!
Today I’ll be sharing a simple recipe for a heavenly cheesecake.
But wait, Jenna, you can’t eat dairy!
You’re right. Let me explain 🙂
My History with Dairy
So, along with my 2014 diagnosis of ulcerative colitis came the simultaneous ban from dairy.
Dairy can cause inflammation, and since I have inflammatory bowel disease, my colon doesn’t need any more instigation.
Receiving that news from my doctor was horrific. (Alright, slight exaggeration, but like many people I had a true passion for cheese).
Throughout these last four years, I’ve explored vegan substitutes for cheese; a lot of them tasted like melted rubber.
That is, until I discovered the brand Tofutti, which made my Thanksgiving dessert contribution possible.
Vegan Cherry Cheesecake
(Keep in mind, this was my first time making a recipe with this Tofutti brand. I had no idea what the cheesecake was going to taste like.)
So I brought it to my grandparents’ house on Thanksgiving, unsure if it was going to be a hit or a total flop.
It turned out to be a wild success! Every slice was devoured and I was mildly disappointed that I’d have none to take home to eat alongside a leftover turkey sandwich.
But it was super exciting that even my family members who could eat dairy also loved the cheesecake—down to the very last crumb.
You might notice the non-dairy whipped cream by its side! I discovered Reddi Wip’s latest addition just in time for Thanksgiving.
What the Future Holds
Now that some delicious non-dairy substitutes are on the market, I plan to try some other recipes of foods I haven’t been able to eat in years.
Some ideas include:
- Vegan Spinach & Artichoke Dip, inspired by Sam from It Doesn’t Taste Like Chicken
- Vegan Cannolis, inspired by Gretchen from Gretchen’s Vegan Bakery
- Vegan Pumpkin Cheesecake, inspired by the great Tofutti itself
I Need More Ideas
Please share your beloved vegan recipes!
Whether you have a go-to non-dairy dish, are experimenting with a vegan recipe, or have discovered some mouth-watering dairy-free cheese replacements, let me know in the comments!
I hope you all had a yummy Thanksgiving!

That’s a wrap for Day 5 of Crohn’s & Colitis Awareness Week.
Stay tuned for Day 6 to see my favorite exercises that are easy on a swollen colon!
In The Comical Colon’s Facebook group, let’s start a conversation:
I truly believe that the way to bridge this disease type’s chasm of alienation, fear, being misunderstood, etc. is to engage in community and share our experiences to help others along their journeys. Let’s learn to share our fears, our trials, and our triumphs to find the comical in the deepest, darkest crevices of our guts.
